“Misidentified” tells the emblematic story of four innocent black men who had their lives brutally changed after being criminally misidentified based on a photography.
Due to successive mistakes, these persons entered a new, cruel, complex, and bureaucratic reality that changed their lives forever, so as their relatives and friends. Justice, racism, and the current ways to control the minorities are the subjects behind these stories, which shed light upon the ghosts of a society forged in the logics of colonialism
The project was selected in 2021 for a DOCSP Laboratory and has partnerships with the Association of Judges for Democracy (AJD) and the Brazilian Law Organization (OAB).

In the early morning of February 22nd, 1998, a section of the Palace II building collapses in Rio de Janeiro, leaving 8 dead and more than 170 families homeless. The building was designed by Brazilian construction company SERSAN, an organization owned by federal representative Sérgio Naya. At the time several accusations about the quality of the building materials and miscalculations on the project were reported. Today, more than 20 years later, most of the former residents still didn’t receive their lawful compensations. Sérfio Naya was not convicted and died in 2009, with millions in debt and the biggest civil case in Latin America.
This is one of the largest tragedies in the history of civil engineering in Brazil and a historical mark depicting the country’s impunity. The documentary seeks to give a stronger voice to the victims forgotten by authorities and by society itself.
